Militants opposing both the Houthi rebels in Yemen and Yemeni President, Mansour Abdrabbuh Hadi have seized the main airport and port in southern city Mukalla

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian peninsula (AQAP) have reportedly driven out troops who were guarding the major port city of Mukalla, Hadramawt province, seizing Riyan airport, the city’s main seaport and oil terminal.

The militant group AQAP are said to be exploiting the fractious situation continuing in Yemen, and began their advance into Mukalla earlier this month, releasing inmates from prison and clashing with one of Yemen’s largest brigades, who have now fled the area.

Air strikes launched by the Saudi led Arab State coalition have so far not targeted the Al-Qaeda presence in Yemen, which includes the Hadramawt province.
